The days of the sneaker occupying space among dust bunnies at the foot of the closet is over.
Case in point: the Nike Air Force One. Long a favorite of celebrities and pro-athletes--including rapper Jay-Z and L.A. Laker Kobe Bryant--the shoe, celebrating its 25th anniversary next month, is currently receiving the attention of a large audience of collectors who are clamoring to get their hands on pairs of limited editions the company has made over the years.
“The amount of information requests specifically about limited-edition Air Force Ones has increased like crazy [in the last year],” says “Hawaii” Mike Salman, editor in chief of LTD magazine, which reports on footwear news. “You have this surge of sneaker collectors that don’t fit the typical mold of the young, urban audience.”
