Winsome, Work-Appropriate Florals

Forbes.com 04.05.07

For many, floral patterns conjure ideas of a grandmother’s apron, chintz curtains or--gasp!--sofa coverings.

But thanks to a number of chic, cutting-edge patterns, florals are blooming on everything from ties, pocket squares, shoes, scarves and dress shirts--making it easy to add a little flower power to your workwear.

"Wearing a floral pattern is a great way to show you have a personality, especially if you work in an office where there seems to be none," says Simon Doonan, creative director of Barneys New York. "But they aren't an easy thing to wear. One mismatched print, and your entire look can go awry."

With any trend this bold, there is a fine line between looking fashionable and looking frumpy.

While large, floral-patterned shirts may suit Jimmy Buffet, the look is far from professional. And women that don a floral dress often run the risk of appearing ready for Easter Sunday--1987.
